According to Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreos, the possibility that the Toronto Maple Leafs are willing to move (or force) Easton Cowan in a trade this offseason is real. While the team wouldn’t want to do that, it’s not off the table if a move needs to be made and Cowan is the trade piece that makes it happen.
And it won’t be the first time the Maple Leafs have left the top spot dangling in trade talks.
Kypreos writes in a recent column:
“Last year, Easton Cowan was pushed as a trade chip in an attempt to acquire Brayden Schenn, but Cowan will be difficult to get back into the game this season. However, depending on what the return is, we can’t rule out the possibility.”
Who would the Maple Leafs target and Cowan could be in the game?
Kypreos writes that one big idea circulating is a potential swing involving Dallas forward Jason Robertson. Contract talks have been difficult, with Robertson reportedly seeking more than $12 million per year – a figure the Stars may struggle to meet. Toronto could afford it, but the acquisition cost would be enormous, likely involving top prospects and becoming more of an offseason move than a deadline deal.
In addition, the demand for goalkeepers is high throughout the league. If Anthony Stolarz returns healthy, he could become a valuable trade chip for the Leafs. The Stars don’t need him, which would likely rule out Stolarz from any package for Robertson. But it would free up some space if Toronto tried to figure out a way to meet Robertson’s extension request.
