Insider indicates that Chris Tanev’s season and career are in trouble

There was a change this week in the speculation about when Chris Tanev could return to the Toronto Maple Leafs. This week, videos from the intermission of the Maple Leafs’ 2-0 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning showed Tanev skating. At first glance that seemed like a good sign. But then the tone within the team changed and what followed did not match the optics.

Nick Kypreos wrote about the situation in his Sportsnet post

The most interesting recording came from Nick Kypreos in his recent Sportsnet column. Not only did he hint that Tanev might not be back anytime soon, but that he might not be back at all. The real decision, which matters, is whether he chooses to go the surgical route to solve the structural problem. If he takes that path, hope – and that is I just hope he comes back well before the end of the regular season. But no one can claim that such an operation is so simple.

Chris Tanev of the Maple Leafs is injured and his return is unknown.

Hints from former Maple Leafs defenseman Jake Muzzin

And that’s where the comparison to Jake Muzzin comes into play. People in the organization remember how that turned out way too well. Muzzin took what seemed like an awkward but manageable hit in October 2022. He skated away, looking shaken but not broken. Then everything unraveled in the months that followed.

The following summer, he sat with specialists to map out two possible futures: surgery or no surgery. Both would probably have caused damage. None of it was clean, none of it was certain, and in the end, he never came back.

While Tanev’s injury isn’t the same, his path mirrors Muzzin’s

Tanev’s situation isn’t necessarily the same, but if Kypreos ties what he hears to Muzzin, it could spell trouble. The hit Tanev took knocked him out of the lineup. Since then, a second question has been added to “When will he be back?” It’s, “What happens if he gets another one of those hits?”

That’s the real fear. Could another clash push Tanev’s career into the abyss? Can it accelerate something you can’t walk away from? Finally, if surgery reduces that risk, it becomes part of the conversation very quickly.

The Maple Leafs have not yet confirmed which direction Tanev’s decision will go

Earlier today, Kypreos again noted the choice Tanev faces. By Friday, Tanev will have missed six consecutive weeks. For a player who built a career on sheer strength — shot blocking, punishing minutes, all the things no one glorifies — the silence around this feels heavy.

No one is saying for sure that their season is over. No one says his career is in danger. At least not officially. But if you listen, you can’t help but worry between the lines.
