They’ve barely entered the workforce and are far from reaching retirement age, but a pioneering real estate company in Malaysia is redefining what it means to retire early and offering Gen Z and Millennials an escape from the daily grind.

In Gopeng, Malaysia, an eight-hectare quiet site is being offered to under-35s as an opt-out for a month – and demand is so high that it is closed to the public until further notice.

Namshan Wellness, about 180 kilometers from Kuala Lumpur, has been reborn as the country’s first ‘Youth Retirement Home’, a tongue-in-cheek pitch to Gen Zers and Millennials who say they are overworked, underpaid and running out of bandwidth.

For about $722 (2,000 Malaysian ringgit) you get four weeks of accommodation, three home-cooked meals a day and permission to do literally nothing.

Namshan Wellness, Malaysia’s first ‘retirement home’ for burnt-out young adults, enables Generation Z and Millennials to let go of life’s daily stresses.

The retreat was founded by a 26-year-old entrepreneur whose parents work in elderly care.

Like a retirement home, the experience focuses on doing nothing, meaning guests can sleep, garden, walk in nature, feed fish, plant vegetables, eat home-cooked food or simply daydream.

The initiative comes at a time when mental health issues are becoming increasingly common among younger demographics.

According to the Black Dog Institute, workers ages 18 to 34 are increasingly reporting worse mental health symptoms, most of which are attributed to work-related stress.

The owner, a 26-year-old Gen Z whose family runs a traditional nursing home, recently explained this in a video interview with Zestie Malaysia which led him to the business idea.

The concept has already proven to be so popular that the retreat has had to stop accepting bookings for the time being.

Namshan Wellness is located in Gopeng, Malaysia.

According to the Black Dog Institute, employees between the ages of 18 and 34 are increasingly reporting burnout as a result of work stress.

“There are many young adults today who are burned out from work and studies, so I thought I could offer them a place where they could regain their energy… to find their life purpose,” he said.

“Older people say: “Young people? Retire? They don’t even make enough money!” There is a lot of response from Boomers, but young people are very excited to come here.”

The owner, who did not give his name, revealed he has been inundated with inquiries from young people since the retreat opened – but admitted the space is somewhat of a social experiment.

He added: “By doing nothing, we are actually doing something. When we go on vacation, we have the idea of resting, but in the end we do a lot of things. This place should exist because we need a place where you don’t have to think too much.”

The retreat is currently listed as ‘closed to the public until further notice’, suggesting the initiative is fully booked due to high demand.
