142 Smith St, Lorne, is on the market with a price estimate of $7.9 million to $8.5 million.

A prestigious architect-designed property described as one of ‘the most beautiful coastal homes in Australia’ could be the first in Lorne to fetch $8 million.

The angular five-bedroom, seven-bathroom home is on track to break a city record after hitting the market with a price guide of $7.9 million to $8.5 million.

Set over three levels, it is a rare gem on the Victorian coast. It offers north-facing ocean views from a blue ribbon strip overlooking Louttit Bay.

Great Ocean Road Real Estate, Lorne agent Ian Stewart is handling the expressions of interest campaign for the property at 142 Smith St, Lorne.

Leading Melbourne architectural firm Jackson Clement Burrows designed the multi-generational holiday home, with basement garages, a swimming pool, theater and reading rooms.

Architect Graham Burrows said the renovation project, completed about a decade ago by Poulsen Builders, was shaped by the remarkable natural resources of the tree-lined, rolling site.

“Some of the design responses were about how we could fit in between those trees in a way that felt sympathetic, and we took into account the tree root protection zones so that actually created some of those geometries,” Mr Burrows said.

“Some angles were also designed to provide views even from further back, back to the bay from the other bedrooms at the rear of the property.

“It was a real respect for what was so special about that place and Lorne in general. It’s one of the few places in Australia where the forest meets the ocean.”

The rumpus room on the ground floor has underfloor heating.

The property is not far from Lorne Pier and the Grand Pacific Hotel.

The kitchen has European appliances and a butler’s pantry.

Floor-to-ceiling windows with ocean views are the hero of the open-plan living area and master bedroom, which has an en suite bathroom with an ocean-view bath and an adjoining sitting room.

“It’s about embracing that amazing aspect and at the same time feeling like you’re in the canopy,” he said.

Being a multi-generational holiday home, there are en suite bathrooms to each of the five bedrooms, as well as a choice of breakout areas and a study for remote working.

Mr Burrows said the owners were passionate about the interiors, which were designed to showcase their artwork.

Other features include a lift, double tandem garage, wine storage and the Control4 smart home system.

Lorne’s current house price record of $7.25 million has stood for six years, when a luxury complex at 1 Roadknight Rd was sold just before the Covid pandemic hit.

Another 5,500-square-foot property in Big Hill sold in December 2022 for $8.25 million.

Expressions of interest at 142 Smith St, Lorne close at 5pm on February 12.
