It can’t go on forever … right?
That is what common sense, not to mention maths or years of golf history, you would like to believe. And yet another week was over, another LPGA tournament was played, and another unique winner lifted the trophy.
The LPGA Tour has organized 26 events this season and all 26 were won by different players. This week’s winner at the Lotte Championship in Hawaii? Sponsor need youmin hwang out, who is not even an LPGA Tour member. And she will not be a LPGA tour -member until 2026. She chose to postpone her entire membership benefits for next year.
In the meantime, the line continues. Completely from the victory of a Lim Kim in February, through the Majors season until now, eight months later. There was a Lydia Ko victory, a Charley Hull victory, victories of three Sweden, five Japanese players and a handful of Americans. World No. 1 Jeeno Thitikul took one, as expected, but not two. She is finished four times as second, including her last two starts, who does her best to cancel this streak, but hardly find herself successful.
What this streak ultimately means for the tour is a bit of a Rorschach test. On the one hand, 26 different winners show a huge level of parity that most sports competitions would like to see. On the other hand, without a clear, several winner, we not only have no idea that should be considered as the player of the year, but there is no dominant star that the LPGA places for a new audience. (Coincidentally 26 is the record for most unique winners in the history of LPGA Tour.)
Perhaps the most amazing element of 26 different winners in 26 weeks is that Nelly Korda-de 7 times the winner of last season is not one of them. Korda did not necessarily struggle this year; She just didn’t play at the winning level that we are going to expect. She admitted that she takes care of a few injuries that do not completely disappear, but will still be the favorite for anyone who wants to continue this crazy series.
For those who want 27 unique winners, the LPGA goes from Hawaii to Shanghai, China. Sei Young Kim, Ariya Jutanugarn, NASA HATAOKA and Gaby Lopez have had the most success this year and not broken.
