Indonesian Gede Priandana creates history with five wickets in an over in T20I

Indonesian pacer Gede Priandana etched his name in cricket history by becoming the first bowler to claim five wickets in a single over in an international T20I match. The remarkable achievement came during the first T20I against Cambodia in Bali on Tuesday, December 23, making Priandana the first man or woman to achieve this milestone at international level.

Defending a target of 168, Indonesia were in a strong position, but Cambodia was still in the fight at the end of the 15th, having reached 106 for five. What followed was a dramatic collapse caused by Priandana’s sensational spell. The right-arm pacer struck with the first three deliveries of the over, dismissing Shah Abrar Hussain, Nirmaljit Singh and Chanthoeun Rathanak to complete a stunning hat-trick.

After a point ball that further tightened the screws, Priandana removed Mongdara Sok and Pel Vennak in successive deliveries to complete five wickets in the over. Cambodia scored just one run in the over, conceding well over a goal between the last two wickets, and were ultimately bowled out 60 runs behind the target, handing Indonesia a comprehensive victory.

The 28-year-old also contributed with the bat earlier in the match, scoring six runs off 11 deliveries as he opened the innings alongside wicketkeeper-batsman Dharma Kesuma. Kesuma was the standout with the bat, hitting an unbeaten 110 off 68 balls, including eight fours and six sixes, laying the foundation for Indonesia’s impressive total.

While this was the first instance of a five-wicket haul in international cricket, the feat has happened twice before in men’s T20 cricket. Bangladesh’s Al-Amin Hossain achieved it in the Victory Day T20 Cup during the 2013-14 season, while Karnataka’s Abhimanyu Mithun famously took five wickets in an over against Haryana in the semi-final of the 2019-20 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

Before Priandana’s feat, there had been 14 instances of bowlers taking four wickets in an over in international T20Is, the most iconic of which was Sri Lanka legend Lasith Malinga’s four-in-four against New Zealand in 2019.

For Cambodia, Shah Abrar Hussain and Etienne Beukes took two wickets each. Priandana received good support from Danilson Hawoe and Anjar Tadarus, who also claimed two wickets each. With the win, Indonesia has taken a 1-0 lead in the eight-match T20I series, with the second match set to be played at the same venue on December 23.
