Shubman Gill or Sanju Samson? Suryakumar Yadav shares who will take the opening position

Gill’s comeback, in addition to being an all-rounder Hardik Pandyahas added both stability and firepower to the Indian T20I team. Gill, who has quickly risen to a leadership role as vice-captain, is expected to resume as an opener – a position he has made his own in recent months.

This has a direct impact on Samson, who had shown impressive consistency as an opener last year while forming a strong partnership with him Abhishek Sharma. However, his successful run did not guarantee continuity, as seen during the Asia Cup where he was moved back to mid-table. With Gill’s return, that shift becomes more permanent. Offering clarity, Suryakumar said the top order has been fixed for now. He acknowledged Samson’s earlier success, but reiterated Gill’s precedence.

“Apart from the openers, everyone has to be flexible. Shubman had played for him in the Sri Lanka series and so he deserved to take that spot,” Suryakumar said in the pre-match presser.

Suryakumar explains the reason behind the division of roles for Samson

Samson’s current approach to domestic cricket only fuels the debate. Are Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy campaign – with scores of 51, 43, 46 and 73 – reflects a batsman at his best rhythm. Many expected such performances would reopen the door for him at the top. However, Suryakumar emphasized that Samson’s value now lies in his ability to adapt in the middle order. The team management views flexibility as the fulcrum of their T20 batting blueprint. He praised Samson’s willingness to float between positions three to six, calling it a trait that enhances India’s tactical depth.

“We have given Sanju enough chances. He is ready to bat at any number he wants. Both are in the scheme of things… one can open up, the other can bat lower. Both can play all roles. They are a good asset and a good headache to have,” Surya added.

With Hardik’s guaranteed spot as a finisher and sixth bowler, competition for the remaining spots in the middle order remains fierce. Samson’s challenge is not his capabilities, but the team’s structural requirements.
