India’s Marine Fish Landings drops 2% in 2024: CMFRI

The Indian marine fish landings amounted to 3.47 million tonnes in 2024, which marked a slight decrease of 2% compared to the catch of 2023, according to the ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI).

Gujarat retained his top position in total fish landings with 7.54 Lakh Ton, followed by Tamil Nadu (6.79 Lakh ton) and Kerala (6.10 Lakh ton). The annual estimates of the Institute, the estimates of the Navy Fish Landing, showed that the Indian mackerel remained the most landed species in the country at 2.63 Lakh Ton, followed by Oliesardine at 2.41 Lakh Ton, according to communication.

Species such as Indian Mackerel, Threadfin trees, Oliesardine, Lintvis, Non-Peaid shrimp and Cefalopods registered a decrease in 2024 compared to the previous year, while landings of lesser sardines, Penaeid shrimp, anchvs and tunnies are added. The west coast region experienced a general decrease in landings, while the east coast showed an upward trend, except in Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh, it said.

Maharashtra registered the highest growth at 47% compared to the previous year. West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Odisha also registered remarkable increases of 35%, 20%and 18%respectively. However, states such as Karnataka, Goa and Daman & Diu have experienced considerable decreases in landings. According to communication, a total of approximately 2.5 Lakh fish trips were checked.
