Indian tea production fell by 6% to 159.9 million kg in September due to the unfavorable climate

Indian tea production declined by around 6 percent in September 2025, with unfavorable environment impacting production in key producing states such as c and Tamil Nadu.

Tea production in September 2025 was 159.92 million kg, down from 169.93 million kg in the same period last year.

In North India, the largest producing region, total production fell 5.61 percent to 138.65 million kg in September (146.96 million kg in September 2024), according to the latest Tea Board data.

In Assam, the largest producing state, production rose marginally to 94.76 million kg in September (94.03 million kg in September 2024). Production in the Assam Valley region increased to 90.31 million kg (88.87 million kg), while Cachar saw a marginal decline to 4.45 million kg (5.16 million kg).

In West Bengal, production fell 17 percent to 40.03 million kg in September, with all production regions – Dooars, Terai and Darjeeling – witnessing a decline.

In Dooars, production fell 17 percent to 22.59 million kg (27.18 million kg), while in Terai the production decline was 17.47 percent to 16.86 million kg (20.43 million kg). In Darjeeling, tea production fell 25 percent to 0.58 million kg (0.78 million kg) in September.

Production also fell in South India during the month of September due to unfavorable weather conditions. In Tamil Nadu, production fell 4.76 percent to 15.79 million kg (16.58 million kg), while in Kerala it fell 14.35 percent to 5.13 million kg (5.99 million kg). In Karnataka too, production fell by 12.5 percent to 0.35 million kg (0.40 million kg).

Category-wise, CTC tea production was 123.09 million kg in North India, while in the South it was 17.21 million kg. Orthodox tea production was 13.97 million kg in North India, while in the South it was 3.47 million kg. Green tea production was 1.59 million kg in North India, while in South India it was 0.59 million kg as per the Tea Board data.
