India’s sugar production rose 18.35 per cent to 19.50 million tonnes till January 31 of the current 2025-26 season, driven by higher output in key states, industry body ISMA said on Saturday.

Sugar production in the same period of the previous season amounted to 16.47 million tons. The sugar season runs from October to September.

According to the Indian Sugar & Bio-energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA), there are 515 sugar factories operational across the country, slightly more than the 501 factories that were operational at the same stage last year.

Sugar production in Maharashtra, the country’s largest producer, rose 42 percent to 7.87 million tonnes on January 31 of the current season. The state currently has 206 factories in operation, compared to 190 factories a year ago.

Production in Uttar Pradesh, the country’s second largest producer, reached 5.51 million tonnes so far, about 5 percent higher than last year, supported by steady crushing activities.

Production in Karnataka, the country’s third largest producer, also showed improved momentum with sugar production increasing by around 15 percent compared to the corresponding period of the previous season, ISMA said in a statement.

ISMA expects net sugar production to increase by 18.6 percent to 30.95 million tons for the 2025-2026 season, compared to 26.1 million tons in the previous season.
