Indian squad for U19 Asia Cup 2025: Ayush Mhatre to captain Vaibhav Suryavanshi team

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the Indian squad for the 2025 ACC Men’s Under-19 Asia Cup, naming the Mumbai-born opening batsman Ayush Mhatre as captain for the tournament that takes place in Dubai from December 12 to 21.

India have been placed in a challenging group with arch-rivals Pakistan and two qualifying teams, paving the way for high-intensity youth cricket.

The newly unveiled 15-member team combines rising stars with seasoned junior-level performers. Key names include Vaibhav Suryavanshi, Vihaan Malhotra (vice-captain) and Abhigyan Kundu, all of whom bring match experience from domestic and Indian age group tours.

Ayush Mhatre: Calm leader who is confident of carrying on India’s youth legacy

Regarded as one of the most technically reliable openers in youth cricket, 18-year-old Ayush Mhatre steps into the leadership role after a string of consistent performances. Hailing from Mumbai’s robust cricket structure, Mhatre has achieved impressive results in domestic U19 tournaments and shown temperament at the IPL level in age-group development programmes.

Coaches consider his calm personality, tactical maturity and ability to anchor innings as key reasons behind his elevation. His appointment reflects India’s long-standing focus on grooming strong leaders early – an approach that previously shaped future seniors like Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul. He is supported by vice-captain Vihaan Malhotra, a wicketkeeper-batsman who is admired for his mid-level stability, sharp glovework and game awareness.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi, Vedant Trivedi and others strengthen India’s balanced core

One of the standout players in the team is Vaibhav Suryavanshia stylish left-hander known for his match-winning innings at both junior and India-A youth levels. His performances in the Asia Cup Rising Stars competition have won him plenty of plaudits, and his ability to adapt under pressure makes him an important asset in India’s top order.

The team has a well-rounded unit with strong supporting roles. Vedant Trivedi adds strength and balance as a reliable all-rounder, while wicketkeeper Harvansh Singh acts as a reliable backup option. The bowling attack will be led by Henil Patel and Khilan A. Patel, both recognized for their disciplined spells and wicket-taking skills.

Promising names like Naman Pushpak, Aaron George and Udhav Mohan further deepen the bench’s strength. Kishan Kumar Singh remains under fitness monitoring and four standby players – Rahul Kumar, Hemchudeshan J, BK Kishore and Aditya Rawat – have been warned about any late changes.

With the semi-finals on December 19 and the final on December 21, the tournament is seen as an important preparation platform ahead of the 2025 Under-19 World Cup in Zimbabwe and Namibia.
