The BCCI on Sunday announced the Indian squad for the 2026 T20 World Cup, along with the same group for the five-match T20I series against New Zealand in January.
The biggest talking point was the exclusion of Shubman Gill. The opening batsman has struggled in T20 internationals, with his returns dipping in the last fifteen innings.
Suryakumar Yadav will continue as captain while Axar Patel will be named vice-captain. The move reflects the team management’s confidence in Axar’s calm presence and growing role in T20 cricket.
One of the positive points from the selection was the return of Ishan Kishan. His strong performance in the recent Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy played a key role in securing a recall to the national team.
Rinku Singh also returns to the squad, underscoring India’s focus on a reliable finisher for exciting matches at the World Cup.
The selectors have leaned heavily on all-round depth. Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel and Washington Sundar give India multiple options for batting and bowling combinations.
In the bowling department, the pace duties are led by Jasprit Bumrah, supported by Arshdeep Singh and young fast Harshit Rana. Spin options include Kuldeep Yadav and mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy.
The batting depth is strengthened by youngsters like Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Varma, while Sanju Samson offers another wicketkeeping option.
The five-match T20I series against New Zealand in January 2026 will be India’s final dress rehearsal before the World Cup begins on February 7.
With clear roles, leadership stability and a strong all-round balance, the team indicates that India plans to enter the tournament well prepared.
