Why did India Post decide this?
India Post took the decision to abolish the registered mail after official data showed a significant 25% dip in registered items of 244.4 million in 2011-12 to 184.6 million in 2019-2020. The decrease is attributed to increasing digital acceptance and competition from private courier companies, in addition to the rise of e-commerce platforms. In the light of the change, the secretary and director -general of the postal department has dedicated all departments, courts, educational institutions and users to move to the new system by the start of the following month. The merger with Speed Post is intended to improve the delivery speed, following the accuracy and the efficiency of the operations.
What are the reactions to the movement?
The relocation of India Post has not only caused nostalgia, but also has cause for concern about affordability, because Speed Post is a relatively more expensive service. The starting costs for registered mail are, for example, RS 25.96 Plus RS 5 per 20 grams, while the speed post starts with RS 41 for a maximum of 50 grams. The price difference can have more influence on the countryside of India, where post offices play an important role for communication. Authorities have argued that the change is needed to meet evolving user expectations in a digital age.
