India on Friday joined a US-led strategic alliance known as ‘Pax Silica’ aimed at building a resilient supply chain for critical minerals and artificial intelligence. The agreement was signed by IT Secretary S Krishnan on behalf of India and US Deputy Economic Secretary Jacob Helberg.

Helberg cited Pax Silica – which comes close after a bilateral trade deal was agreed – as a declaration that the future belongs to those who build and when free people join forces; while US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor said it is a coalition of capabilities.

Ambassador Gor announced last month that India had received an invitation to join the strategic alliance. The Pax Silica Summit was held in Washington on December 12 last year, where partner countries signed the Pax Silica Declaration to build a secure, resilient and innovation-driven supply chain for critical minerals and artificial intelligence (AI).

The declaration outlines a shared vision of deep economic and technological cooperation across supply chains – from raw materials to semiconductors and AI infrastructure – and commitment to mutual prosperity and security. One of the key pillars of Pax Silica was to establish a sustainable economic order to drive AI-powered prosperity in partner countries.

The member states of the Pax Silica include Australia, Greece, Israel, Japan, Qatar, the Republic of Korea, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom.

“We recognize that a reliable supply chain is indispensable to our mutual economic security,” the Pax Silica statement said.

“We also recognize that artificial intelligence represents a transformative force for our long-term prosperity and that reliable systems are essential to ensuring our mutual security and prosperity,” the report said.

Speaking at the gathering to witness India’s entry into the Pax Silica, Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai said the US-India partnership has a crucial role to play in making the benefits of AI available to everyone, everywhere. He said Google is proud to serve “both figuratively and literally” as a connection point between the two countries.

“We are working to build AI products and solutions for Indian consumers and businesses. To strengthen India’s incredible developer community, we have already contributed 22 Gemma models to AI Coach and are working closely with the government to bring AI applications with real-world impact,” Pichai said.

India is on an extraordinary trajectory with AI, and Google is supporting it with a full commitment, including product scaling and infrastructure, he added.

Highlighting that YouTube supports a vibrant ecosystem of Indian content creators sharing music, art and culture with the world, he also said that Google through its AI skills house is working to equip 10 million future Indian leaders with the tools to drive global progress. But the best results are not guaranteed, he added.

“Innovations started in India, like Google Pay, are making products better for people around the world. I believe India is on an extraordinary journey with AI. And we are supporting with a full commitment, including products, skills and infrastructure,” Pichai said.

Whether it’s delivering timely weather forecasts to farmers, helping healthcare workers screen for diseases like diabetic retinopathy, or making information and services accessible in more languages, Google’s commitment extends to reimagining the products people use every day, he noted.

For example, he said, AI is changing the way people use search: Indian users are among the largest users of voice and visual search globally. “Our scam detection features with Circle to Search and Lens are used more in India than anywhere else. The Gemini app is growing rapidly across the world and is available in 10 languages spoken in India,” he added.
