Sumit reversed the problem for India when he defeated 18-year-old Henry Bernet 6-1, 6-3 in the fourth rubber for a 3-1 win over Switzerland in the Davis Cup World Group-1 tennis binding in Biel on Saturday.
NAAL had closed the first day before India on 2-0 by winning his singles after Dhaakshineswar Suresh had given a dream start by beating the Swiss no.1 Jerome Kym in straight sets. The 28-year-old was pleased to guarantee the victory for the team.
India had lost the heavy doubles match when the Swiss pair of Jakub Paul and Dominic Stricker Sriram Balaji and Rithvik Bollipalli beat in a moving match 6-7 (3), 6-4, 7-5.
That made it lively for the fans in the Binnenarena. The Swiss replaced their No. 1 Jerome by the young boy who had won the Australian Open Junior Singles title this year. However, by the time the young person closed to play his flowing game, to hit a handy backhand with a flourish and to run like a rabbit, NAAL had tightened his grip on the game.
“It’s a while for us to win in Europe. We all pushed each other a lot into the team. We are happy with the victory. The Doubles was difficult. The level was very high. I was sweating more, looked at the sidelines game. When I had to play the young man. India, on the inner hard courts.
It was a masterstroke of the captain Rohit Rajpal and the team to have brought in reserve player Dhakshinewar Suresh to play on the first day. As soon as Dhakshinewar had claimed his big match, India had the better chance against the host, especially with a reverberation that played close to his best.
The Indian pair could have won the Doubles, but on 4-4 in the second set, after he won the first, Balaji and Bollipalli did not succeed in converting three breaking points in the ninth game on Paul’s Servee.
Quite considerable, debutant Bollipalli dropped Serve at Love in the tenth game.
In the decision-maker, the Indian pair went up 3-1, but the serve of Sriram Balaji was broken in the sixth game. Bollipalli had to stay at 5-6 in the game and dropped serve at Love, to give what a facial point for the Swiss turned out to be on their home base.
As Captain Rajpal had noticed in advance, it was a 50-50 match for India in both singles and Doubles. The Indian team did well to win in style by achieving three singles points in a road surface in Europe, against such a strong opponent such as Switzerland.
The results: India BT Switzerland 3-1 (Sriram Balaji & Rithvik Bollipalli lost from Jakub Paul & Dominik Stricker 7-6 (3), 4-6, 5-7; Sumit NAKAL BT Henry Bernet 6-1, 6-3).
