The excitement increases India And South Africa get ready to renew their red-ball rivalry in the upcoming two-match Test series, starting on November 14 at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata. The series promises to be a riveting battle between two equal parties: India, led by Shubman Gilland the Proteas below Temba Bavuma‘s leadership. Both teams will look to fine-tune their squads ahead of the ICC World Test Championship cycle.

India’s biggest boost comes in the form of Rishabh pants‘s return to the Test setup after a long injury layoff. Rich in history, the rivalry has always produced memorable matches, and the 2025 series is expected to be no different.

Hashim Amla reveals his top three Test batters of all time

Ahead of the highly anticipated series, South African legend Hashim Amla shared his thoughts on the best Test batters of all time, but his list sparked quite a bit of debate among fans. The former Proteas icon named his top three Test batters and left out some modern icons, including India’s Virat Kohli.

Amla’s first choice, Steve Smithhas been a dominant force in Test cricket, scoring over 10,000 runs at an average of 56, including 36 centuries. His unorthodox technique and exceptional hand-eye coordination have made him one of the most consistent performers of the modern era.

“To be honest, I really like Smith’s batting in Tests. In my opinion, Smith is the best Test player in the world,” Amla said as quoted by NDTV.

Coming in second on Amla’s list is Joe Rootthe former England captain who redefined batting in challenging conditions. With over 13,500 Test runs and 39 centuries, Root’s ability to play spin and pace with equal authority has earned him worldwide admiration.

“After this I would pick Joe Root at number two, again he is a great Test batsman,” Amla added.

Amla chose number three Kane Williamsonthe cornerstone of New Zealand’s batting line-up. The right-hander, known for his calm demeanor and elegant strokeplay, has amassed more than 9,000 Test runs across 33 centuries, leading his side to numerous historic victories, including the maiden World Test Championship title in 2021.

‘I would definitely put Kane Williamson at number three’ Amla further added.

Amla leaves out Virat Kohli despite having a legendary record

Amla’s list raised eyebrows as Kohli, one of the most successful Test batsmen of the modern generation, was not included. Known for his intensity, fitness and remarkable consistency, Kohli is India’s run machine across all formats. In his illustrious Test career, Kohli amassed 9,230 runs in 123 matches at an impressive average of 46.85, including 30 centuries and 31 fifties.

Kohli’s reign as captain was equally historic: he led India to 40 Test victories, the most of any Indian skipper, and played a crucial role in transforming India into a dominant force both at home and abroad. His double centuries against the likes of South Africa, England and Sri Lanka are a testament to his class and mental toughness.

However, Amla’s omission of Kohli can be viewed through the lens of recent developments as the Indian legend retired from Test cricket earlier this year, ending a glorious chapter that spanned more than a decade.
