Speaking at the SA20 event in India, Smith shared his views and said: “I hope that in the first Test in Kolkata it is generally a good place to bat and where you get value for your runs. It is a stadium that, especially when full, will really motivate the South Africans to perform well.”

Crucially, he warned that falling behind in Asian conditions is a deficit that will be almost impossible to overcome, putting the blame squarely on the front burner.

“I think on these types of tours it’s crucial that you start well. If you get behind the game in the subcontinent, it’s very difficult to fight your way back. And the batters in particular will really have to take a step back.” the 44-year-old claimed.
