The former Indian wicketkeeper warned that if India ask Sundar to focus more on his batting, it could hamper his bowling skills in the long run. The Tamil Nadu all-rounder has taken 35 wickets in 16 Tests so far at an average of 30.34.
“What is Washington Sundar, the Test player, being looked at? Is he a bowler who can bat? Now if you send him at three o’clock you are almost telling him to concentrate a lot more on batting. The moment he starts spending those long hours batting in practice, you tend to reduce your bowling practice because it is physically impossible to be good at both. So the message is very clear that we are looking at big runs from you. This could have an impact in the long run on his bowling. It’s a very difficult one.” he said on Cricbuzz.
‘I always felt he was underused’ – Shaun Pollock on Sundar
Former South African captain Shaun Pollock praised Sundar for joining as rank turner in Kolkata. He hoped that the Indian team management would give him a series of four to five Test matches at the third position and see how he fares.
“Application is the right word. I think he will still work out his game plan, how he wants to set the pace in three innings, when he wants to be positive or aggressive. But he deserves a point. So keep him in that position, give him another four to five Test matches and see how he goes. If it’s not going well, maybe you can try to change something. I always felt he was underutilized. They probably could have looked at him a bit more. But as far as batting goes, there goes, there There’s nothing wrong with his application. As he goes along, he’ll elaborate more,” Pollock said.
