Badrinath could not understand why a top player of Sanju Samson’s caliber was dropped from the T20I XI to accommodate Gill in the line-up. When he rejoined Gill, Badrinath noted that someone other than Gill should be appointed Suryakumar Yadav’s deputy.
“Sanju Samson has scored three hundreds. We are talking about T20 cricket, and he has three hundreds. What more do you want as a player? It’s a bit painful to see a player who has performed so well warming up the bench. He is the vice-captain of the team. I think only a player who is a certainty in the XI can be captain or vice-captain. With these figures, he has become vice-captain. I can understand if there is no are backups, but India has no shortage of talent in T20s,” Badrinath said while commenting on Star Sports Tamil.
Kris Srikkanth, who also commented along with Badrinath during the match, echoed the latter’s sentiments. He also highlighted Samson’s explosive strike rate and said the team management had no idea of the real reason why the wicketkeeper-batsman is being left out of the XI.
The T20I series against Australia was nothing special for Gill. He could only score 132 runs in five innings. With the 2026 T20 World Cup fast approaching, it will be interesting to see how India compose their XI when it comes to including Gill in the mix.
Talking about the series, both India and South Africa have won one match each. The third match is scheduled for Sunday, December 14, at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala.
