Shubman Gill has reportedly been cleared to return for India in the upcoming five-match T20I series against South Africa, giving the top order a timely boost after a difficult few weeks. The series begins on December 9 in Cuttack and marks his first international appearance since a neck injury forced him to withdraw from the Test and ODI legs of the tour.
According to sources, after completing his rehabilitation, Gill received full medical clearance from the BCCI Center of Excellence in Bengaluru. A message from the CoE to the Sports Science and Medicine Unit confirmed that he is fit to play in various formats. The update ends weeks of uncertainty for a player who has become central to India’s long-term plans.
The injury happened during the Kolkata Test when Gill hurt his neck while attempting a slog sweep. He had to withdraw midway through the match and later missed the entire second Test and the ongoing ODIs. His absence was felt in an embarrassing 0-2 Test series defeat.
Now that the clearance is in hand, he is expected to join the T20I squad immediately. India have a tough schedule ahead and Gill’s return gives them much-needed stability at the top, especially in a format where rhythm and confidence are very important.
Hardik Pandya will also return in this series. He has recovered from a left quadriceps injury and recently scored 77 in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, easing concerns over his match fitness. India will hope his all-round skills add depth in both batting and bowling.
Selectors have also made a few changes. Rinku Singh and Nitish Reddy have been left out as the squad has been reshaped for the short tour. The focus is now on building a permanent group before a busy agenda starts early next year.
A CoE update summed up the relief in the camp. “Shubman Gill has successfully completed his rehabilitation at CoE and has met the required criteria to be declared fit for all formats of the game.”
India will look at this series as an opportunity to reset after the Test loss. Having Gill and Hardik back makes that task a lot easier.
