IND vs SA 2025: Reports – Shubman Gill likely to miss 2nd Test, doubtful for next ODI series

Captain of India Shubman Gill reached Guwahati along with his teammates ahead of the second Test against South Africa. However, his participation in the series decider is at stake. The Punjab batsman is recovering from a neck injury he suffered during India’s first innings in the first Test at Eden Gardens last week.

Shubman had to leave the field after facing just three balls on Day 2. He could not participate in the rest of the encounter as Rishabh Pant was the stand-in captain. The 26-year-old was taken to hospital and kept under observation. He was dismissed the next day, much to the delight of the Indian fans.

The BCCI posted a statement on Wednesday (November 19) confirming that Shubman would travel to Guwahati with his teammates, and the medical team will monitor his condition ahead of the second Test, which begins on Saturday. The board said a call for his participation in the series decider would be made later this week.

Shubman was seen wearing a neck brace upon arrival at the Kolkata airport on Wednesday morning. However, when he reached Guwahati, the supporting medical aid had not been fitted. While this brought some hope to fans, the latest news could once again dampen their spirits.

According to a report from India Today, their sources have stated that Shubman will miss the second Test, and his participation in the subsequent three-match ODI series against the Proteas also remains in doubt. It is stated that the team management does not want to take any risks in view of a busy international calendar. The right-handed batsman could be rested in the ODI series to give him time to regain full fitness before the upcoming assignments.

If Gill misses the second Test, Sai Sudharsan or Devdutt Padikkal could come into the squad. Vice-captain Pant will lead the team. India are 0-1 down in the series after losing the first Test by 30 runs.
