According to Gavaskar, once on the field the burden of performance was on the players and not the coach. He asked Gambhir’s critics why the former left-handed batsman was not getting enough credit for his recent title wins.
“A coach can prepare you, guide you and share all his experiences, but once you step on those 22 yards, it is the players who have to perform. If you didn’t give Gambhir credit for winning the 2025 Champions Trophy or winning the 2025 Asia Cup, why blame him now? You can’t ignore the wins and only react to the losses,” Gavaskar said during an interaction with India Today.

Speaking of India‘s Test series against the Proteas, they lost the opening match of the series at the Eden Gardens by 30 runs. It was a low-scoring match that was in the hands of the Temba Bavuma-led unit.
The second Test in Guwahati was a case of total domination by the tourists. They gave India a thumping of 408 runs to defeat India in a Test series in India after a gap of 25 years, while also breaking several other records.
The Men in Blue will now take on the South Africans in three ODIs, followed by five T20Is. The all-format series, which kicked off on November 14, will conclude on December 19. It remains to be seen what the decision regarding Gambhir will be once the series ends.
