Star New Zealand batsman Daryl Mitchell said the Kiwis are determined to perform well in the white-ball matches against India and will not let the subsequent T20 World Cup act as a distraction. The Blackcaps will play three ODIs and five T20Is against the Men in Blue from this week.

Mitchell is looking forward to the challenge of taking on a “world-class” Indian team in their own backyard, in packed stadiums. The right-handed batsman, who scored a stunning century in the 2023 ODI World Cup against India, also praised Indian bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Varun Chakaravarthy.

“We are looking at the T20 World Cup in a month’s time. For now, we are worried about playing an ODI series against India, and they have some pretty good bowlers of their own, like Bumrah and Chakaravarthy,” Mitchell told the media at New Zealand Cricket’s Golf Day, organized by TCM Sports.

“A very important value for us as a New Zealand cricket team is where we stand and that means we are in the present and what the challenge is at that moment. The exciting thing is that we have three ODIs against the world class Indian team in Indian conditions, in front of a packed crowd. So we will stand where our feet are. We will control it now and we will look forward to the World Cup in a month’s time,” he added.

It’s a big challenge when you get to these parts: Mitchell

Mitchell emphasized the need to adapt to the different conditions prevailing around the world. He said he wants to learn from his past experiences playing in India and do well in the upcoming matches.

“I have been playing international cricket for a while now and part of playing international cricket involves adapting to different conditions around the world,” he said.

“It’s a great challenge when you come to these parts. As a New Zealander you don’t grow up on surfaces like this, so I’ll be able to build on the experiences I’ve had over the years and take the positives, like the ODI World Cup in 2023,” he added.

The first ODI between India and New Zealand will be played at the BCA Stadium in Vadodara on Sunday, January 11.
