The Indian selectors will finalize the ODI selection against New Zealand today, with several tough decisions on the table. This three-match series will be India’s last series of ODIs before the focus shifts completely to the T20Is and the 2026 T20 World Cup.

One of the biggest talking points is Rishabh Pant’s future in the over-50s. Pant’s uneven form in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and lack of ODI opportunities under head coach Gautam Gambhir have put a lot of pressure on his place.

The team management is reportedly unhappy with Pant’s risky batting style in ODIs. At the same time, dropping him without a good run could lead to sharp criticism, especially given his previous ability to win games.

With KL Rahul remaining the first-choice keeper, Ishan Kishan is currently leading the race as a backup option. Kishan’s recent domestic form and safer approach are working in his favour.

Tempo attack and workload management

Another key decision revolves around Mohammed Shami, who has a strong case for a comeback after taking eight wickets in four Vijay Hazare matches. With Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya likely rested, the selectors want fresh legs in the pace group.

This opens the door for youngsters Harshit Rana and Arshdeep Singh to get longer runs in ODIs, especially with the emphasis on building depth.

The top class logjam continues

Despite their stunning domestic form, Devdutt Padikkal and Sarfaraz Khan still face an uphill battle for places. The top order is already packed with Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli.

Gill is expected to return to the top order alongside Rohit, with Yashasvi Jaiswal as backup. Kohli will remain at number 3, while Ruturaj Gaikwad is likely to end up in the middle bracket.

Shreyas Iyer is racing against time at the NCA and is undergoing match simulations to prove fitness ahead of selection.

Spin unit remains set

The spin attack is expected to remain unchanged with Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav forming the core. Extra attention will be paid to Kuldeep’s role as a wicketkeeper during the middle overs.
