On this episode of Inclusion Revolution Radio, I’m your host RJ Nealonfilling in for the very talented Novie Craven. Instead of being in a studio and behind a microphone, we’re on the ground at MetLife Stadium for the Unified Flag Football Championships, presented by Special Olympic Games New York and the Jets from New York. There are twelve high schools throughout the New York City public school system, exemplifying what it means to be inclusive. By means of Special Olympic Games Unified Sports®Special Olympic Games athletespersons with intellectual disabilities, and Uniform partnersindividuals without intellectual disabilities exercise together.
Despite the cold and rainy conditions, cheers and laughter could be heard throughout the stadium. You could see athletes’ breath filling the air, just like you would see watching a New York Jets game in December. For many of these athletes, it will be their first time on an NFL field, let alone in a stadium. It’s a common childhood dream that remains just a dream for most, but for these athletes from Special Olympics New York and Unified partners, that dream has come true.
Throughout the episode, I interview athletes from Special Olympics New York and Unified partners, along with Special Olympics New York President and CEO Stacey Hengsterman, Special Olympics New York Director of Unified Sports Vance Toure and Special Olympics New York Vice President of Downstate Operations Diane Colonna.
Listen to find out what the movement means for New York Jets linebacker Quincy Williams and defensive lineman Harrison Phillips as they all work toward inclusivity!
