In which year, Honda started using CVTs (and are they reliable?) – Jalopnik

The Japanese automaker Honda began to use Variable Transmissions (CVT) in the 1996 Civic HX Coupe, making it the distinction to be the first automatic car to get the top 10 of the EPA’s top 10 list of most fuel-efficient cars that year. It came in second place of the Geo Metro, a vehicle that those who are old enough to remember were the embodiment of cheap, economical, but somewhat worthless transport.

The metro earned the EPA’s first place by registering an excellent 44 mpg city and 49 mpg highway. In the meantime, the CVT-Uituest Civic HX Coupe, fresh from its sixth generation EK series Debut (the best Civic in my book, mainly because it is the last Civic that has double wishbones in the front and back), 35 MPG city and 41 MPG highway. In addition, the Civic HX accelerates from zero to 60 mph in 9.4 seconds, which happens to be about 1.1 seconds faster than a Burgersedan with a conventional automatic gearbox with four gears.

The CVT has been around surprisingly (after the British in 1923 invented), and it works differently than a conventional gear -controlled automatic. Since the launch of the Civic HX CVT in 1996, Honda’s CVT has migrated to its other offer, in particular the CR-V, HR-V and Accord-Honda has even made a CVT for bicycles but does it promise that customers expect from the Honda-badge customers?

Are Honda CVTs reliable?

The answer is a mixed bag. Imperial Valley Honda said: “Some Honda owners with CVTs have experienced problems that are not limited to one generation, such as liquid leaks and overheating, but most drivers can solve, prevent or even ignore minor problems.” Moreover, it adds: “Despite their sustainability, Honda CVTs can experience problems; with the right care, however, they can help owners cross more than 300,000 miles on their vehicles.” The Reddit community has a few things to say about Honda CVTs. An HR-V-owner of 2016 had to replace the CVT, and according to Honda technicians, inflated CVTs in cars that are often launched at Stoplights. As long as you keep it stable, stop ignoring service bulletins and avoid treating your Honda as an outing, owners can expect hundreds of thousands of trouble-free kilometers from their CVT gearboxes.

However, the R/Cars -classdit has a different version. There is a 2013 Accord Sport that bought the owner new, but they had to replace the CVT at 90,000 miles, although the Honda Care warranty had covered everything. On the other hand, a Civic 2016 with 85,000 miles did not have any number and taps like a clock.

The point is that every machine, or an internal combustion engine or a CVT transmission requires periodic maintenance, including regular inspection, draining and supplementing the CVT liquid. Just like automatic transmission fluid (ATF), CVT fluid will not last forever and will eventually relegate to a watery, sludgy ruke, especially after collapsing countless heat cycli. If this is the case, symptoms such as slipping, judgments, delayed gear and unusual sounds will result from the CVT, which are significant signs of imminent failure.

How you can take care of the CVT of your Honda

In addition to not driving as a length and not treating traffic lights such as a personal tow strip, Honda recommends that CVT liquid changes every 25,000 miles, but that number is under serious use for vehicles. Honda dealers, however, usually recommend a liquid change every 30,000 miles or once every 40,000 miles, depending on the car and how it is driven. Maintaining the integrity of the CVT liquid is of vital importance to let your Honda CVT perform its best, and the same applies to every car with a conventional automatic, CVT or double clutch transmission. Things to avoid are the use of the wrong type of liquid that your Honda CVT will seriously damage.

When something goes wrong, Honda CVTs have a “weak at home” mode that illuminates an indicator light in the check engine to warn the driver and prevent more damage to the CVT. When this happens, take your car immediately to diagnose the error and tackle the problem before something as trivial as a CVT liquid change turns into a wallet, CVT replacement.
