Think twice before going over the speed limit or lending your car.
The state of Maryland has introduced a new law that could put a major dent in drivers’ wallets. A law which went into effect on October 1, introduced a new provision that increased fines for speed cameras to a maximum of $425.
Before the law came into effect, all drivers were captured on camera violating speed limits was fined $40. Fines will now depend on how fast the driver was going. Those who exceed the posted speed limit by 25 km/h or more will be issued a $40 ticket. A driver going 26 to 30 km/h over the limit faces a fine of $70. This increases to $120 for drivers who exceed the limit by 30 to 46 km/h. For 30 to 60 km/h over the limit, drivers will be fined $230, increasing to $425 for exceeding the posted limit by 60 km/h or more.
The controversial law is being introduced as the state wants to crack down on ‘superspeeders’, defined as drivers who exceed the speed limit by large margins and are sometimes repeat offenders. Lawmakers point out that superspeeders pose a danger for the entire community.
“The math is simple: the higher the speeds, the greater the injury, whether you’re in a car, walking or biking,” said Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich. stated in a press release.
The camera does take a photo of the speeding vehicle and automatically send a ticket to the registered address associated with the license plate, so drivers are unlikely to know they have a ticket until they receive it in the mail. Vehicle owners are responsible for fines if they lend their car to someone else.
Last month, a new law went into effect in the state, increasing penalties for reckless driving. Reckless driving is defined as drive at least 30 kilometers per hour above the speed limitThis means that drivers can now be fined if they are caught driving at least 50 km/h over the limit.
Those charged with reckless driving could face up to 60 days in jail, a fine of up to $1,000 and six license points.
