In the midst of misleading advertisements by builders, the government asks states, Reras to take action

New Delhi: in the midst of cases of builders and their agents with the help of “GOVT style terminology” to make their projects look like official housing schemes, the Center States and Reras Regulators (RERAs) asked to take action to stop such advertisements to prevent buyers being deceived. They are also asked to submit reports to guarantee the protection of buyers’ interests.

Sources said there was a detailed discussion about the issue during a recent meeting of the Central Advisory Council (CAC) by RERA, chaired by Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar. Some samples of such misleading advertisements were also shared with all members, including representatives of State Govts and RERA authorities.

“This has been identified as a persistent problem, and that is why there is a need to tackle this immediately,” said one of the CAC members. The ministry pointed out in his presentation that in some cases advertisements have not announced the names of publishers or promoters. “By doing this, such players circumvent all compulsory standards, such as revealing specific information regarding projects. It seems that many of these advertisements are being distributed by brokers,” said a source.

Abhay Upadhyay, a member of the CAC and President of the Homebuyers’ Group FPCE, has written to Khattar and emphasized the need to protect misleading advertisements to protect consumers. In fact, a study conducted by the Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) in Maharashtra last year showed that of the 2.087 ads, 1.027 were contrary to the standards recorded by the Maharashtra Rera.

FPCE has also expressed concern about data mism matches between RERA web pages, websites of developers and sanctioned plans, whereby the government is encouraged to implement a system to eliminate such discrepancies.
