Emma Raducanu has underlined her excitement for what she describes as a “fact match” against the world NR.
“It is always exciting for a player like me to play the top, because it is as a fact game,” said Raducanu. “You see where you are compared to the top. I also think that form fluctuates so much on the day. You can lose two [6-2, 6-1] One day you can win or you can close it the next day, and it can be a few points. So I’m excited. “
It will be Raducanu’s first important competition since he started her new coach, Francisco Roig, in Cincinnati last week.
Last month she played one of her best matches against a top player to make life difficult for Sabalenka in Wimbledon in two tight sets. After serving for the first set and then holding a set point against the Belarus, Raducanu led 4-1 in the second set before he lost 7-6 (6), 6-4.
“She played incredible tennis,” Sabalenka said about the British player after her starting sets had won against Marketa Vondrousova on Saturday evening. “I am super happy to be back mentally and physically, and will certainly be back in the top 10 soon. She has challenged me so much, and I like to accept difficult challenges, so I am super enthusiastic about looking at her on the hard courts.”
Raducanu gave an honest answer when he was asked if she left the Center Court in Wimbledon, decided to have a crack at Sabalenka as soon as possible.
“I would say I thought I would like to have a crack on grass, like tomorrow,” she said laughing. “But I know, and I am honestly reasonable enough, and, I think, honest enough in myself to know that different surfaces prefer different people and where my game is in comparison. I think the grass has given me a bit of an advantage, but we will see how things are going.”
In recent months, Raducanu has had a positive form during training and consistently competing during the Tour and she could be sown for the US Open. Although she performed well in the competitions she preferred to win, the lessons of most of her earlier meetings against the top players are that her general level has just not been good enough.
Working together in their first few days, Raducanu and Roig will at least get a clear understanding of exactly where she stands compared to the very best.
On Sunday, Cameron Norrie struggled poorly in 33c (91F) heat and moist circumstances when he lost 6-4, 6-3 against Roberto Bautista Agut in the second round.
After he had left the 37-year-old Spaniard through an early break, Norrie seemed to find his way when he suddenly started to feel sick. Although he fights hard until the end, he spent the rest of the game holding his chest and hardly able to move on the field: “[In the] 5-4 Game I started feeling that I wanted to surrender, “said Norrie.” Maybe it’s the heat, I don’t know. I went to the bathroom and threw everything after the first set and I still felt not good. And I had no energy in the second set. “

The 32nd in Cincinnati has been in great shape in Cincinnati in recent months and followed his fourth round on the French Open with a quarter -final run in Wimbledon. Norrie had hoped to keep his momentum on the North -American hard courts, his favorite surface, but he struggled in every tournament instead. Norrie’s physicality is usually one of its biggest strengths that have made these results frustrating.
“At the moment I don’t know what to say,” said Norrie. “We try everything. We use the ice. We change shirts and always change grip. I don’t think it’s so hot, as if it’s hot, but it’s not surprising. I just don’t know why my body doesn’t let me play. It also has to be mental, because I am really good in the heat, and I have such high expectations for myself to do well in the Hitte.
In his first game since he lost Wimbledon to Jannik Sinner last month, the Heren No. 2 Seed Carlos Alcaraz held in the decisive moments against Damir Dzumhur despite a turbulent version to reach the third round in Cincinnati with a 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 victory. Coco Gauff, the ladies no. 2 seed, defeated the third round with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Wang Xinyu.
