Rockets head coach Ime Udoka highlighted Houston’s improved shot selection in Monday’s 100-97 win over Phoenix. “It took our time and we found the guys wide open… we didn’t force any shots,” he said.

Udoka credited the team’s defensive adjustments for limiting Phoenix’s quick break points. “They had 23 fast break points in the first half and none in the second…they only gave up four for 21 threes,” he noted.

The coach described the final play that produced Kevin Durant’s game-winner. “We just let him open up to a spot… he walked into a shot and said it felt good as soon as he let it go,” Udoka explained. He added that situational timing was crucial: “I would say it might have been a little harder after four seconds… but he would have made the pass and had an open look anyway.”

Udoka praised the defensive versatility of Jabari Smith Jr., while Alperen Sengun is sidelined. “He went up against a lot of different games tonight… it gives us a lot more versatility and depth on defense,” he said.

Addressing the team’s early struggles, Udoka noted the slow start: “Our energy wasn’t great coming out… we conceded 10 to 21 from three in the first half.” He highlighted the halftime adjustments that fueled the comeback: “18 points in the third quarter, 19 points in the fourth quarter… shows that we took it to heart and understood what we would get out of the game.”

The coach also highlighted Durant’s impact in late-game situations. “He’s done it his whole career… you get a quality shot, or he gets a quality shot for someone else,” Udoka said.

Houston’s win was fueled by balanced contributions. Amen Thompson added 17 points, seven rebounds and six assists, while Jabari Smith Jr. Scored 17 with seven boards. Durant finished with 26 points, 10 rebounds and four assists, including the decisive 27-foot three-pointer with 1.1 seconds left.

The win ended Phoenix’s two-game losing streak and gave Houston its 22nd win of the season. Udoka praised the team’s collective performance, saying: “Whether you make a shot or miss, you can live with that, but doing the right thing… that was different from the first half.”

The Rockets travel to Portland for back-to-back games, while the Suns head to Memphis for Wednesday’s game. Udoka emphasized the team’s focus moving forward: performing offensively, staying disciplined defensively and relying on their stars when they find themselves in trouble.
