Indian assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate has opened up on strategies ahead of the decisive final of the ODI series between India and South Africa. From adapting to tougher conditions to the likelihood of winning tosses and Washington Sundar’s role in the ODI team, he had thrown light on almost every aspect of the game.

India lost the match in Raipur despite setting a target of 359 runs, while South Africa chased a record total on foreign soil for the first time. Following the defeat, several loopholes in the Indian mentality and gameplay have been discovered, and Ryan Ten Doeschate has made his stance clear towards the decider in Vishakhapatnam.

With some feeling that India would slow down towards the end of the innings, especially after Virat Kohli’s dismissal, Ten Doeschate explained that this is part of responsibility and players need to adapt to the circumstances.

“There is an element of responsibility in it. I think we did quite well. The slight delay was because the wicket became heavier. We did take the dew factor into account. The dew factor is so big here,” said Ryan ten Doeschate.

“We started in the first game, we thought 320 was par. Then it was 350-360. Yes, you have to maximize, but you have to find ways in tougher conditions,” he added, asserting that India scored the maximum possible runs considering all aspects of the game.

“We win 1 in a million.” Ten Doeschate reflects on the fate of India in tosses

India might have won and lost games; The past year has been a rollercoaster ride for the Indian team. But one thing that has remained constant for the Men in Blue is their fate at the coin toss.

Be it ICC events or the Asia Cup, be it Tests or one-dayers, be it Shubman Gill, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant or KL Rahul, be it in England, India or Australia, the Men in Blue have been consistently losing.

Speaking about the same, Ryan Ten Doeschate joked: “We win 1 in a million. All jokes aside, it’s about the preparation. In the end we will win a toss.”

Indian coach reveals the real reason behind Washington Sundar’s limited usage in Raipur

India did not make use of Washington Sundar with the ball, especially after giving him 3 overs into the match as the first spin bowling option in Raipur. The Indian coach revealed that given the conditions of the game and the track, 20 overs of extra spin bowling could not be used.

“You can’t bowl spin for 20 overs in those conditions. Washington is still learning, he’s confident. He’s had 12 very good months. He’s working on certain things, like having five fielders outside the circle when batting,” said Ryan ten Doeschate.

However, this clearly poses a threat to India’s tactics, as if multiple spinners are not needed to bowl on such surfaces. Why then don’t India consider a regular batsman like Rishabh Pant in the XI, instead of all-rounder Washington Sundar, who has failed to show promise in a final role?
