I’m ready to continue in the Tour: Sasikumar on the climb to the top

For Mukund Sasikumar, staying in the present and enjoying his time on the field are priorities now.

The 29-year-old Indian has not had the best of times in singles over the past year. However, he is confident that he will recover and win again.

“This year I just want to play good tennis and enjoy it,” Sasikumar said The Hindu after booking a spot in the Chennai Open ATP Challenger doubles final alongside British partner Jay Clarke.

“The most crucial thing was that I had fun on a tennis court after a long time. I think that was the most important thing,” he said.

“As kids, we do that because we love tennis. But then, when it becomes a profession, sometimes we start taking it too seriously. So we don’t really get many matches where we just play for the sheer passion of it,” said Sasikumar, the world number 513 in singles.

He said that like life, there are ups and downs in a tennis career, and there have been dips despite trying his ‘best’.

But the Chennai-born player is confident of climbing the ladder. “Yes, it is very difficult to try it during the Tour, but I am willing to keep doing it,” Sasikumar said.

“It’s a privileged life if you look at it from the other side. I mean, you travel the world and play a sport for a living. Singles are still my priority and once I’m done with it (singles), I would probably like to return home and spend time with my family as I have missed too many crucial years with my younger sister, mother and others,” Sasikumar signed off.
