The head coach of UFC Welterweight champion, Jack della Maddalena, does not think it would be wise for Ilia Topuria to try his hand with 170 pounds.
Topuria was the UFC -Fedweight champion before he moved a weight class to fight for lightweight gold. “El Matador” finally recorded the title of 155 pounds by switching Charles Oliveira on UFC 317 in June. There are a number of worthy challengers in the lightweight division, but if Topuria cleans him up, conversations will probably come up from a possible movement to good weight.
Ben Vickers, the coach of Maddalena, appeared on Submission radio and explained why Topuria would make a mistake if he moved a division (h/t Inappropriate).
“He’s my height, and I’m a dwarf,” said Vickers. “He must stay where he is. It will be a very bad decision for him to come and fight Jack. They are essentially the same hunter – he is just a dwarf and jacket is a little bigger. They do a lot of the same things very well, and I love Ilia. He is one of my favorite fighters to watch because I think he is fighting like Jack.
“They are very on each other, but I don’t think he has a company to jump on two weight classes and fight Jack. But that is up to him. If he wants to do that, Fair Play for him. I respect it, and I think Ilia will soon be at a point if Islam he can do what he wants because he cannot stop.”
Vickers helps Maddalena to prepare for Islam Makhachev, the former UFC light weight champion who has left its gold to fight for the Welterweight title. Vickers does not believe that the Kin van Makhachev will be able to hold it against Maddalena, who has demonstrated a solid removal of Takedown and fresh striking in his title win at Belal Muhammad in May.
