UFC lightweight champion Ilia Topuria has provided an update on his proposed return to active competition later this year.

Ilia Topuria has a string of potential contenders waiting to fight him at 155 pounds, but beyond that, there’s also a chance Topuria could move up to welterweight to chase a world title in the third weight division, something that has never been accomplished in the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

“Hopefully in the summer,” Topuria told Adin Ross during a livestream on Kick. “…I don’t know (if I fight in the White House). It’s like you don’t tell the UFC how to fight and where to put you, and they don’t tell you how to fight.”
“Right now I have no idea what’s going on,” Topuria said. “…I know I’m going to fight in the summer, but I don’t have a specific date or place – but I know I’m going to fight. I’m ready.”

Ilia went on to suggest that he thinks it will probably be Justin Gaethje who he faces, but the UFC’s matchmaking has obviously been pretty wild in recent months – and with the White House card just around the corner, it’s impossible to really know which direction they’re going.
‘El Matador’ has suffered some setbacks lately, but if he can go in there and knock out whoever faces him in his next fight, the UFC will likely strap a rocket to his back as his superstardom continues to grow.
