The second largest internet provider in Australia is investigating a cyber attack that has exposed the e-mail address of 280,000 customers.
The listed parent company TPG Telecom of Iinet told the market that it investigated the cyber incident with unauthorized access to an older management system.
TPG has engaged external IT and cyber security experts to help with the answer to the incident. The “unknown third party” was removed from the Iinet system on Saturday.
About 280,000 active E -mail address and approximately 20,000 active fixed telephone numbers have been taken from the Iinet system, TPG told the market this morning.
In addition, around 10,000 Iinet user names, street addresses and telephone numbers plus around 1,7000 fashion setting passwords were accessible in the hack.
TPG confirmed that the existing system did not contain copies of details of passports, driving licenses, credit cards or bank information.
The internet provider – the second largest in the country behind Telstra – said early investigations point to the hacker who has gained access by using stolen account details of an employee.
“We apologize unconditionally to our Iinet customers who are affected by this incident,” TPD said.
“We will immediately take steps to contact affected Iinet customers, advise on all the actions they have to take and offer our help.
“We will also contact all non-impact-iinet customers to confirm that they have not been affected.”
TPG – who also counts Vodaphone, Lebara and Felix Mobile under his umbrella – said that it currently had no evidence to suggest an impact on his wider systems or other customers.
The Australian Cyber Security Center, the National Office of Cyber Security and other government services have been informed of the incident, TPG said.
It is not the first time that the internet provider has reported a cyber incident, with a maximum of 15,000 e -mails from Iinet and Westnet customers that were violated in 2022.
