“Do you want to know a secret?” the man they call “The Martian” teased in a post to his 328,000 IG followers. “Adductors aren’t just for girls. If you want big legs, you’re going to have to put up with the ego and the not-so-fun exercise.”
It’s important to give your adductor muscles some love. These are the muscles on the inside of the thigh that help bring your legs together. To be clear, adduction is the leg-closing movement, while abduction is the opposite movement. One of the easiest ways to perform this exercise is to use the seated adductor machine, where you squeeze your thighs and bring two opposing pads together, then slowly return them to the open position before repeating the exercise.
How adductor training improves muscle growth in the legs
Martin Fitzwater has been busy lately. He came fifth in the Mr. 2025 Olympia finals and has won the EVLS Prague Pro back-to-back. To impress the judges, The Martian has focused on both the fullness and symmetry of the muscles, with his legs being a standout feature.
“Welcome to leg day, we start with adductors,” Fitzwater explains of his proven strategy. “Nothing special here, nothing crazy, just really focusing on getting the adductor warm here, getting blood (circulating) throughout the leg.”
While adductors are great as a warm-up, that’s not the only reason to perform this exercise. “And then the adductor is a big stabilizer of the knee, so when we work quads today, we really want to make sure that the knee is stable so that we don’t get injured. So this is kind of an injury prevention, slash warm-up, slash pre-exhaustion if you will. So a little bit of everything here, but this is what we like to start with, kind of a foundation for us, and it seems to be working. Our legs are pretty decent.”
Now that you know Fitzwater’s secret, why not start your next stage day with his winning strategy?
