We wanted to get a snapshot of what Newcastle United fans think.
Three months into the season and seventeen games played in three competitions so far.
Now in the November international break, Newcastle United fans will see their team win eight games, draw three and lose six.
These results summarize a start to the season with many ups and downs.
Plenty to talk about when we ask some of Newcastle United’s regular/irregular contributors to The Mag to give us their thoughts on the season so far, plus what will happen as we move forward.
Jinky Jim then answers the questions.
Three words to describe how you currently feel as a Newcastle fan?
Expect the unexpected
If you had to choose. A win against Sunderland but losing to Fulham in the Carabao Cup quarter-final, or losing to Sunderland and progressing to the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup?
For years I always answered this question with ‘winning a trophy’, but the current situation is different.
We have to beat this bunch. But I’d settle for a point. If the media blacks out after a loss, our season could implode.
Would winning the Carabao Cup this season BUT finishing outside the top six of the Premier League be a success or a failure?
Winning a trophy should be seen as a successful season, or what are we playing for?
So finishing 8th would be okay for me. However, if Newcastle United were to “do a Spurs” it would be seen as a problem by many.
By hand: What’s your best guess (not a hope!) of where Newcastle United will finish this season in the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup, how well they will realistically do in each of these?
Eredivisie, 7th or 8th.
Champions League, last 16.
FA Cup. It’s a lottery. Take Arsenal away in the third round and we’re out, but Carlisle at home, then Hull at home etc, and who knows.
League cup. We will beat Fulham, but then it will probably be Chelsea, Man City or Arsenal. Just like last year. Get the second leg at home and I think we can go to Wembley again.
In order: which six NUFC players have been the most impressive so far this 2025/26 season?
That’s a tough question because we’ve been so inconsistent. It’s fair to say no one has been impressive all season. But sometimes; Sandro, Thaiw, Big Nick, Jacob Murphy, Bruno, Trippier.
Eight months ago, Eddie Howe lifted Newcastle’s first trophy in 56 years, and two months later secured a second Champions League qualification in three years. Some Newcastle fans now appear to be questioning his stance. What do you think of Eddie Howe and how much time has he deserved to get his league position in order and beyond, or not?
This time last year I wrote a piece discussing whether Eddie had taken us as far as he could. That’s aged well, hasn’t it?
We’ve waited a lifetime for some success and now some want to dump the guy at the first sign of trouble. Come on, he deserves to turn it around this season. Just like he did last year. But he will know that if he finishes 14th, his time at the club will end.
What do you think of how the summer transfer window was handled by Newcastle United?
Way too late, not helped by the Isak debacle. Common sense says that your new players are better than the old ones, but right now that doesn’t seem to be the case. But I remind myself that there are only eleven PL games left in the season.
What is your assessment of how each of the six summer signings will be rated after they have all finished their careers at Newcastle United? In any case – Thiaw, Ramsdale, Ramsey, Woltemade, Elanga and Wissa should be seen as one of three choices – A success, OK done, Failure.
Thaiw - a success
Ramsdale: If he makes the team, he can easily be a success. However, if he is on the bench, it means his time has been a non-event.
Ramsey – He seems like a good type of player to me. Not an eye-catcher but still important for the team.
Elanga – like all of us, I really want him to have a game that will start a great time with us. But he just doesn’t do anything yet. Sadly, I think he’ll be gone in two years. I think Gordon and Barnes will join him.
Woltemade and Wissa – their fates could be intertwined. If they click, they can become heroes. If they don’t… I think our season depends on how these two gel.
What do you think are the three negative things for Newcastle United so far this season?
To paraphrase the former right honorable member for Sedgefield: expectation, expectation, expectation.
The negatives are that a season in which we have won three Champions League games so far and reached the last eight of the cup is seen as a crisis.
Of course we have problems to address, but it’s certainly not 1992 or 2009.
What would success mean in the 2025/26 season for Newcastle United?
Repeat last season? Winning the league cup with a decent league finish.
But if the draw were very friendly and we somehow reached the last eight of the Champions League, would that be seen as progress?
Predict the top six in the Premier League (in order) and which three clubs will be relegated.
Man City, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Man Utd, Villa.
Wolves, Fulham, Burnley
Would you rather finish all three seasons in the top four BUT win nothing, or finish all three seasons in the middle of the table AND win the FA Cup in one of the three?
Having achieved the dream last year, I’m afraid I’m becoming more and more inclined to buy into the ‘build the brand’ argument. And I hate myself for saying it.

What do you make of the fact that we are now over four years after the takeover and still no plans have been announced for a new training ground, nor for a much larger capacity stadium (either brand new or larger capacity St James’ Park)?
This is my biggest complaint. We all understand that this won’t happen overnight, but it looks like additional seats won’t come until sometime around 2030 at the earliest.
I currently have work done in the dental department at the RVI, so I regularly walk along Richardson Road past Leazes Park. I really don’t care how many great crested newts live there, for the good of our city and region we have to build a new stadium on it.
It’s the perfect location.
I’m sure we can find somewhere else to house the dog poop, medicine needles and Stella cans.
Would you say winning the Carabao Cup last season has made you more satisfied, or now makes you more desperate for the next one?
Personally I’m more satisfied, but I think for others it has let the genie out of the bottle and more success is now being demanded.
