The International Cricket Council (ICC) still has an official answer to the request from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to remove the referee of the match during the Asia Cup 2025, but the administrative body will probably not allow the question. PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi had searched for the replacement of Andy Pycroft from the referee panel after the controversial handshake episode during India and the collision of Pakistan in Dubai on September 14.
Sources suggest that there are insufficient grounds to justify the PCB’s request and an ICC response will soon be expected. According to Cricbuzz, the prevailing image within the administrative body that Pycroft played only a minimal role in the controversyOnly transferring a message to Pakistan’s captain to prevent the public shame from one skipper who refuses to shake the other by the pitch.
Civil servants believe that the PCB requirement agrees a poor precedent by a member council to influence the official agreements of the match without strong justification. The controversy comes from the Asia Cup League match on September 14 at the Dubai International Stadium, where Indian players do not shake their Pakistani counterparts with their Pakistani counterparts after the game.
According to the manual of Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), handshakes are not required before or after agreements, a point that the ICC will probably emphasize in its formal response to the PCB. The situation has escalated because reports indicate that Pakistan has threatened to boycott their upcoming match against the VAE on 17 September if their requirement is not met. In particular, Pycroft is appointed as the match referee for that fixture.
The impasse adds uncertainty to the Asia Cup, although the dominant attitude of the ICC remains that corresponding officials cannot be changed to the insistence of a single member council without sufficient reason.
“The PCB has filed a complaint with the ICC with regard to violations by the competition referee of the ICC behavior code and the MCC laws with regard to the spirit of Cricket. The PCB has demanded immediate removal of the match referee of the Asia Cup,” Naqvi said in a social media post.
However, the question of Naqvi, who also serves as president of the Asian cricket Council (ACC), has not received much grip. Although the appointment of competition officials is dealt with by the ICC in consultation with the local administrative body, it is considered very unlikely in this case that the ICC will pay serious attention to the request.
Interestingly, the PCB did not contact the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) directly, the managers of the laws of Cricket. Instead, the board raised the issue under the flag of the ‘Spirit of Cricket’, but there seems to have been no formal communication with the MCC.
The Spirit of the MCC of Cricket pediatry makes it clear that although handshakes are encouraged as a sign of respect, they are not mandatory. The preamble emphasizes the importance of showing courtesy to civil servants and opponents, regardless of the result, but is not part of the binding laws of cricket.
The following are a few points in the spirit of Cricket Chapter:
- Respect is central to the spirit of Cricket.
- Respect your captain, teammates, opponents and the authority of the referees.
- Play hard and play honestly.
- Accept the referee’s decision.
- Create a positive atmosphere through your own behavior and encourage others to do the same.
- Show self -discipline, even when things go against you.
- Congratulate the opposition on their successes and enjoy those of your own team.
- Thank you the officials and your opposition at the end of the game, regardless of the result.
- Cricket is an exciting game that encourages leadership, friendship and teamwork that people from different nationalities, cultures and religions brings together, especially when they are played in the spirit of Cricket.
