IAS officer Rinku Singh Rahi, who was posted as SDM of Shahjahanpur’s Puwaiyan Tehsil, was transferred to the Revenue Council in Luckknow. The government of Uttar Pradesh made the decision a day after a video arose, which showed that the IAS officer did sit-ups for lawyers to publicly allow the lack of cleanliness in his new placement in Puwaiyan Tehsil. Shahjahanpur District Magistrate (DM) Dharmendra Pratap Singh told PTI that Rahi, who was only placed on Puwaiyan Tehsil on Tuesday, is now relieved of the post.
What happened on July 29?
The unusual incident took place on Rahi’s very first day at the office. During the inspection of the Tehsil building, he saw waste littered over the compound, dirty toilets and some people who urinated in the open air. He dedicated the perpetrators to do sit-ups as a punishment to give an example. Later, while he met a group of lawyers who were on strike, Rahi was questioned about the punishment.
The lawyers pointed out that the administration was also guilty of the prevailing unsanitary disorders in the Tehsil compound, including the presence of stray animals and dirty toilets. Rahi responded by recognizing the decline and, in an apparent gesture of humility, held his ears and sit -ups for the lawyers – an action recorded on video and was spread on a large scale on social media.

The SDM later told PTI that the idea was to encourage better public behavior. “When I saw people peeing near the toilets, I asked them to use the facilities. When they refused, I let them do sit-ups. I saw some school children wander through the building, and their parents were made to do sit-ups as a fright,” Rahi explained.
Rahi remembered the incident with the lawyers and said, “They asked if I would take responsibility for the dirty conditions in the Tehsil and do sit-ups myself. I said yes, because it was our shortcoming, and I did it.” He added that the Tehsildar had told him that a significant clearance had been carried out in the last 10 days, but acknowledged that if dirt remained: “It is our fault and I accept it.” Administrative sources said that Rahi did not return to the Tehsil headquarters on Wednesday and left for Luckknow later in the day.
