Ian Machado Garry has his sights set on the UFC welterweight title and plans to head to Georgia to train for the potential title fight against champion Islam Makhachev once he gets past Belal Muhammad at UFC Qatar this weekend.
Garry was in attendance due to his media commitments ahead of this weekend’s fight night. In an interview with Giorgi Kokiashvili, “The Future” greeted his Georgian fans and informed them about his desire to come to Georgia soon to prepare for the possible fight against Islam Makhachev, which could be next for him. He said:
“If I fight Islam Makhachev, Georgia and all the Georgians out there, I’m going to need help. I’m going to need your help. So I’m going to come to Georgia.”

Garry is currently the No. 6 ranked UFC welterweight contender. This weekend he plans to put in a dominant performance against Mohammed, then fight Makhachev. Many have noted that Georgian wrestling can be useful against the Dagestani fighters, as demonstrated by Merab Dvalishvili versus Umar Nurmagomedov earlier this year, which is why the Dubliner wants to visit Georgia.

Ian Machado Garry has his future mapped out after UFC Qatar. Once he defeats Belal Muhammad, ‘The Future’ plans to march on and dethrone Islam Makhachev. He then plans a rematch with Shavkat Rakhmonov and then another rematch with Carlos Prates.
However, Makhachev has shown no interest in a duel with Garry. Instead, the Dagestani wrestling maestro wants to fight former champion Kamaru Usman.
However, Garry thinks Makhachev vs. Usman doesn’t make sense right now, as Usman isn’t the fighter he used to be, and Makhachev wants to fight him as he’s looking for an easy defense of the first title. Speaking of the same thing, the Irishman said MMA junkie:
“I understand why him [Islam Makhachev] wants it because of what Kamaru Usman was… But he [Kamaru Usman] is not the same champion he used to be… The dominance he had at one point is not the same anymore, so I think Islam sees that as an easy victory. An easy defense of the first title.”
