In the past 14 months, the Ryder Cup has been the present and future of Keegan Bradley as the leader of Team USA.
Bradley has immersed himself as a captain, impressive world no. 1 Scottie Scheffler and other fundamental team members with his motivating tactics and connection with the group. While he leads a brain confidence that the cup hopes to recover Bethpage Black in September, Bradley also plays the best wave of his career, making his work as a captain much more difficult than expected.
When Bradley won the Travelers Championship in June, it seemed a foregone conclusion that he would choose himself as the first playing captain since Arnold Palmer in 1963. But since that victory in Connecticut has gone Bradley T41-T30-T44-T17. That has made his unbearable decision – one that he will take on Wednesday when he makes all six of his captain’s picks – the more difficult.
“It’s hard because I want to place the team in the best position to win the Ryder Cup,” said Bradley after the third round of Saturday at the Tour Championship 2025 in East Lake. “So there is a kind of stranger to it – Arnold Palmer did it in 1963, but it is now a totally different tournament. It’s just a tough decision. All choices are difficult. Captain will be rated on who they choose. Quite strange thing to choose yourself. It’s something I’ve been thinking about for a long time, and I just want to make sure we make the right one.”
If Bradley, who has not played in a Ryder Cup team since 2014, is looking for a sign of What to doThe last two days at East Lake may have sealed his Ryder Cup -Lot.
He arrived in Atlanta gassed from a long list of Ryder Cup tasks, from handing out tickets on Bethpage on Monday to a dinner on Tuesday. The Ryder Cup is everything he thinks of as his decision and the competition in the neighborhood. Bradley did not expect to play well at East Lake this week, and an opening round of even Par did not do much to strengthen the matter to choose one of the last places in the team. But then a sizzling six-under 64 came on Friday, who went back Bradley on Saturday with a 63 to Vault in position. He goes into fourth place on 13-under on Sunday, three shots from Tommy Fleetwood and Patrick Cantlay.
“I have no idea,” said Bradley on Saturday when he was asked what let him play well this week. “I was so tired Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. I was trying to get through this week.

Bradley admitted that getting the Ryder cup out of his head was almost impossible, even when he is in the ropes to win the golf tournament. He thinks of things halfway through the round and writes them in his Yardage book to put in his phone afterwards.
He is the captain, and that is a hat that he cannot take off.
“I caught myself on the range today and thought of something that I wanted to tell the Bethpage team, and it happens to me during the round,” Bradley said. “I see a man on the leaderboard, and I remember to combine him with whom we think about it, and it is great that they play well, or I wish they were a little higher, whatever it is. It has been a wild year. I just try to tackle what is for me, and I think I have done a good work of it.
“But it’s really difficult,” Bradley said that they are captain and play at a high level. “You talk to the captains from the past, this is when you really start to strengthen it. They do the same; they are just not competing here like me. They have gone exactly the same. It is just a different unique experience. One that I never expected.”
Six members of the Bradley team have already been put in stone.
Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, JJ Spaun, Bryson Dephambeau, Russell Henley and Harrish English automatically qualified on points. It seems likely that Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa and Cantlay will also be on their way to New York in September. Ben Griffin has played excellent golf all season, and Cameron Young, who has a good history at Bethpage, has recently been hot.
That leaves Bradley, who is in 13th place in the official World Golf ranking list and gets the chance to win the FedEx Cup on Sunday in East Lake to put the final touches to his own final explanation. On paper, where Bradley was not the leader, he would probably be a lock to make the team. The fact that he is the one who has to call makes it much more difficult. It is a dilemma that the PGA of America may have foreseen, but one that nobody has the answer to resolve.
“It is really strange to think about making the choices and to think about picking yourself,” said Bradley. “It is ridiculous. It sometimes doesn’t seem like reality. But we are going to do our best to make the right decision, and it will be controversial for certain people anyway. I am prepared for that.
Bradley could hold the FedEx Cup in 24 hours. He would be a dual winner this season and undoubtedly one of the 12 best American golfers. Should he tear around East Lake, a course that he has not played historically, once again, catching up Cantlay and Fleetwood while he holds an attacking Scheffler, certainly that should be captain Keegan Bradley to make that call, right?
“I don’t know,” said Bradley. “We’re going to discover it tomorrow. I’m going to win or I am not, and we’re going to know the choices. We are quite confident with the choices we have. Another day of golf to complete this whole thing, and I can’t wait.
“I’m done with this whole process. I want to finish it in both ways.”
Captain Keegan Bradley will have his answer in 18 holes. That is, if he has not found it in East Lake for the past two days.
