Wwelcome to I Tried It, a GOLF.com series about golf gear – apparel, equipment, accessories, etc. – that we recently tried out. We’re here to give our honest, no-nonsense take on the latest and greatest golf or golf-related items. So scroll down to read what we like about golf’s latest (or new to us) products.

Readers of this space know that I often use my husband, Paul, a club professional from Phoenix, as a kind of guinea pig. He is a frequent sounding board for me on all kinds of golf topics, but is especially useful on the equipment front, where he can provide feedback and insight on a range of men’s products and other equipment that I have not used.

The latest test case: Scheyden sunglasses. Scheydens are manufactured in Japan and designed with peak performance in mind for pilots, fishermen and golfers, with lenses that feature a multi-layer coating process for superior optical clarity and comfort.

Scheydens are worn on tour by Paul Casey of LIV Golf, and the Scheyden golf line made an immediate impact when it was introduced on the PGA Tour Champions. Now more than three dozen players and caddies wear Scheyden sunglasses – more than on any other tour.

Although Scheyden’s glasses are not gender specific, the sample I received last year is the brand’s own Looper model — was a bit big for my face, but fit Paul perfectly.

For Arizonans, sunglasses are essential for driving and really any outdoor activity. That’s why I asked Paul to give the Loopers a test drive and let me know what he thinks.

Spoiler alert: It’s been months and Paul’s previous pair of glasses have been put aside, with the Scheydens taking up the mantle as his new go-to. What does he like so much about them? It came down to three primary factors.

Scheyden Looper

The Scheyden Looper is made in Japan and features a feather-light, incredibly strong TR90 composite frame.

They look cool. The Loopers have a large rectangular frame that looks sporty yet sophisticated, allowing you to wear them anywhere. And as you scroll through photos of the players and caddies wearing the Looper, you can see that the style is almost universally flattering.

They are comfortable. No pinching sound and no heavy feeling on the bridge of the nose or the tops of the ears. Paul said the glasses also fit seamlessly under his hats.

You can read the green together with them. For the Scheydens, Paul said he didn’t wear sunglasses while golfing. But now he puts them on in the morning and wears them all day – and he can also easily read the green when he wears them, which wasn’t the case with previous pairs. It turns out this is all part of Scheyden’s design, with the brand emphasizing that they’ve found the perfect level of lens contrast and color to allow wearers to keep the glasses on all the time outside.
