‘I think the curator and the groundsmen…’, Suryakumar Yadav expressed doubts about Wankhede’s pitch despite thumping US

After a hazy start, captain Suryakumar Yadav allowed the sunlight the team needed most. Perhaps the pitch at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, where India took on the US cricket team for the third match of the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2026, also needed some more sunlight for better batting.

After winning the match against the US by 29 runs, the Indian skipper discussed various aspects of the match as the team surprisingly took a back seat in the first innings against the US bowlers. Without Yadav’s unbeaten 84 off 49, the defending champions might not be able to register 161/9 in 20 overs for a winning effort.

Suryakumar Yadav explained why the batters performed poorly

But why did the Indian batting line-up, with so many talented and proven T20 batters, suddenly feel at odds against a lower-ranked team? Suryakumar Yadav did not blame anyone, but tried to highlight certain parts of the match, including the field, where he himself played a lot of cricket.

In the post-match presentation, the victorious captain explained that he played a lot of cricket at various grounds in Mumbai, including the Wankhede Stadium. But during the match against the US, the deck behaved differently; even Yadav himself, the local batsman, took some time to understand the nature of the surface.

“I had the belief that I have batted in similar situations. And also when I played a lot of cricket here in the Maidans of Mumbai cricket, Azad Maidan and Cross Maidan. So I knew if I bat till the end, I can make a difference (on the field today). It was a little different wicket from what it always is in Wankhede,” said Suryakumar Yadav.

Doubts about the Wankhede Stadium pitch

He didn’t blame the pitch curator or the ground staff, but he felt that due to the weather conditions the nature of the pitch was a little different. Lack of sunlight in the morning hours may have affected the deck.

“We knew it when we woke up in the morning; we saw that there wasn’t much sun outside. I think the curator and the groundsmen did their best to prepare the best pitch. But I think there are a few things out of their control. So there wasn’t enough sunlight to roll and water that pitch,” the skipper added.

Suryakumar Yadav gave updates on Jasprit Bumrah and Washington Sundar

Before the chat concluded, Suryakumar Yadav gave important updates on Jasprit Bumrah and Washington Sundar, who were unavailable for the match. He was the captain and told us that Sundar is good now and he will join the team in Delhi. And Bumrah had a high fever because of the weather.

“Washi is joining us in Delhi. He is fine. Everything is fine. Bumrah, he had high fever due to the weather, just like Abhishek was sick. But rest; everything is fine,” Yadav concluded.
