Note of the editors: Since 2022, more than 2,400 accounts Trying to shake up on trans -rights has been introduced in the United States, in both Capitols and Washington. Some of these legislative efforts are intended to limit the access of Trans People to medical Or bathrooms and other public spaces. Others force schools to Ignore the gender identity of their students Or Bar Trans -Athletes from sports teams. In June 2025, which is a proud month in the US, the Supreme Court gave these anti-translets legal legal support which means that a ban on gender -confirming care for minors can come into effect in Tennessee. Experts expect that the ruling of the court in the United States against Skrmetti will increase the future legal and regulatory attacks on the trans -community.
Many anti-translets, such as the prohibition on gender confirmation of Tennessee, focus on children and adolescents. However, news reports about this problem can often concentrate young voices in the middle. This summer, Rewire News Group is working together with the site for sexual education for young people Scarlet To take first -hand accounts from Trans Kids, their parents and others in their support systems about how they do it at this political moment.
In the coming months, RNG will periodically publish letters from Trans Youth and their communities. The correspondence in our transmissive collection has only been edited for punctuation, not to change the author’s content or voice. Identifying information is edited for privacy, unless the author of the letter has explicitly authorized use of their name. Transchildren who are interested in sharing their stories can Click here.
Why this Arizona Chicano is angry and anxious, but still proud
My name is Daniel Trujillo. I am a 17-year-old Trans Chicano from Arizona. I come from a long line of immigrants. My great -grandparents, my grandparents and my father all emigrated from Mexico and eventually became naturalized citizens. I am very proud of my heritage and family.
I came out when I was 8 years old, and I was lucky to have parents who were incredibly supportive. We found a great community in our town of Tucson, Arizona, and over the years the ties we have created have worn us through difficult moments. I was able to receive gender-confirming care, to attend an affirmative school district with non-discrimination protection, and I had the love and support of my family.
My parents and I have been arguing for trans -young and their families for almost ten years. Year after year we went to our State Capitol in the hope that we can stop harmful anti-transmissions to pass. Community has always been central in all our advocacy.
It is this community-oriented focus that I am always reminded of the sacrifices that my parents, community, movement leaders and “tran-cestors” have made. These sacrifices are the reason that I can live authentically.
Three months ago my family and I decided to leave the US. This was a decision that we never wanted nor to make. A month after departure we heard the news that all gender -confirming care for adolescents in Arizona was cut. It is terrible to see our loved one becoming an uninhabitable place for transkinderen like me. What is even worse, [President Donald] Trump and his administration do not even care about transmenses! They just want to use us as political pawns to stay in power and make money.
I feel angry! Trump, his administration and extreme right -wing lobbies have taken so much from us. They have those among us who can move, to flee our houses and families, hoping to find a safer house where we can continue to receive the gender -confirming care that we need. I feel angry because I am worried and afraid of my friends who are back at home and are not sure of where they have access to the care that has been stolen from them! Make sure we know that lives are saving.
Our government is constantly attacking us. And although we have left the country, we still feel the consequences of these attacks. It is a constant memory that this is a global effort to erase transmenes, and we must treat it as such. We must organize and protect each other, regardless of the limits! Transmensen exist everywhere and we deserve to live freely.
I wish our CIS, straight and white allies would see that. This is not as usual political, and although I am very angry about it – I am forever grateful and proud of who I am! Proud to be a trans/queer chicano! We will continue to fight tomorrow for a better one.
In solidarity,
Daniel Trujillo, Arizona (he/him)
