Playing its best hockey in several weeks, BU dominated the first 50 minutes of the game, building a 3-1 lead on goals from Jack HarveyHutson and Jonathan Morello before surrendering two late scoresthe second with just 1:01 left– which sent the match to extra time.

‘I thought we played a simpler game’ Coach Jay Parolfo told the media. “I thought we won more pucks all over the ice, and that’s par for the course for us, we were just more competitive in terms of pucks. We were playing below their goal line and winning pucks, which allowed us to keep up the offensive zone pressure. That was a bit of an issue for us.”

“We’re a little bit short tonight, and for the guys to step up, I thought we played a much more complete game as a team, actually from start to finish.” Pandolfo emphasized.

Next to Sacha Boisvert And Conrad Fondrkwho also missed Friday’s game, BU played without Kamil Bednarikwho he believes has a lower body injury Bernie Corbett.

After the game, Pandolfo said to the Terriers: “Everyone started playing in a certain way and we also played together. If we have that mentality, to play the game that way, we’ll like the results… It’s fun to see you guys play like that.”

From the start, BU skated with the jump and direct play Pandolfo was looking for. An early bench penalty for the Huskies due to too many men on the ice gave BU a chance to revive the power play, which had been 0-for-18 in the previous four games.

The second unit converted at 4:09 with a nice display of moving the puck from low to high to clear space. Sascha Boumedienne pushed the puck to Owen McLaughlin move in from the point. The transfer from North Dakota weaved through the left circle drawing a crowd and sent a pass to Harvey for a one-timer from Cole Eiserman‘s office. It was his fifth goal of the season.

Five minutes into the game, the Terriers had a 7-1 advantage in shots.

Terriers nearly scored a second power-play goal midway through the period when Eiserman stayed through the Huskies but was denied at the goalmouth (0:50 of the highlight reel).

BU doubled the lead at 13:33 on a patented Huston rush. He ran into the offensive zone from the left side and fired a sharp angle shot that Quentin Sigurdson defended. Washington collected the rebound as he went behind the net and beat the goalie with a wrap-around. Hutson had tried the same thing Friday night and thought he had given BU a third-period lead, but after a review the ruling was a no-go. Gavin McCarthy and Boumedienne picked up the assists.

It looked like BU would end a near-perfect period with a 2-0 lead, but with nine seconds left, McCarthy was called for a cross-check. NU won the ensuing tie and shot on goal, allowing Jacob Matthieu to jam the puck past Mikhail Yegorov with 2.7 left in the period.

Northeastern was back on the power play a minute into the second period Brandon Svoboda was called for crocheting. Consigned a Husky turnover in the offensive zone Ben Merrill and Morello racing across the ice two against one. Merrill faked a shot and moved the puck to the right circle, where Morello one-timed it past Sigurdson’s glove for his third of the season.

Late in the period, freshmen Charlie Trethewey was whistled for head contact and given a five-minute major and a game misconduct. Pandolfo made his displeasure with the call very clear. The Terrier penalty takers were, in a word, lights out (okay, that’s two words), preventing the Huskies from setting up in the BU zone until the final minute of the extended man advantage and limiting them to three shots.

Shots for the period were 13-5 BU, despite the Terriers spending nine minutes on the penalty kill.

Unsurprisingly, the Huskies came out firing in the third period and the Terriers kept them at bay for the first twelve minutes. With 7:45 to go, a NU clear hit Eiserman in the face and he immediately went into the tunnel for repairs.

Thirty seconds later, the Huskies cut the lead to one. With the puck along the left boards, BU failed to clear the zone, leading to Vinnie Borgesi’s one-timer from just above the right circle. Yegorov made the stop, but the rebound went straight to Dylan Hryckowian on the goalkeeper’s right and he buried him in the half-open cage.

Northeastern pulled Sigurdson for an extra skater with a twenty-five buck left in regulation. With the puck in the left corner of the BU zone, McCarthy fanned out on a clearing attempt. After a pass from Borgesi, Hryckowian fired a shot from just outside the left circle. He headed well wide of the net, but hit Hutson’s skate and shot behind Yegorov with just 1:01 to go.

On Friday night, the Huskies had stunned BU with a game-winner with 1:07 left in regulation time.

In overtime, both teams took penalties and were still skating with three on the side when Hutson was put on the mantle of hero. In the BU zone, McCarthy won a battle along the boards and dismissed Hutson, along with McLaughlin, on a 2-on-0 rush. Hutson closed within three yards and, while being taken down by a pursuing Hryckowian, fired a shot past Sigurdson’s glove. It was his seventh goal and third game-winner.

Terriers defeated the Huskies, 47 to 24, winning 34 of 62 matchups.
