Hurricanes Beat the Avalanche 5-4 in a Shootout After an Instant Classic – The Hockey Writers Carolina Hurricanes Latest News, Analysis and More

Heading into the penultimate game on the NC State Fair road trip, the Carolina Hurricanes headed to Denver, CO to take on the Colorado Avalanche, who did not lose in regulation. It was a special game as both teams played in throwback jerseys, harkening back to the old Adams Division between the Hartford Whalers and the Quebec Nordiques. After a chaotic match with a slew of penalties and goals, the Hurricanes/Whalers came out with the 5-4 shootout win about the Avalanche/Nordiques.

Summary of the game

The first twenty minutes of the game were, by the looks of it, absolute hockey chaos five goals in the period. Four of them belong to Hurricanes, not Whalers. Seth Jarvis and Sebastian Aho continued their points streak, which now stands at seven, as both boys got a goal in the opening period. Jarvis’ seventh of the season fell short, with five of those coming during the 2024-25 season. Eric Robinson scored the first goal just over three minutes into the match. Logan Stankoven capped a brilliant period for the visitors, rounding off Scott Wedgewood’s night with four goals from eleven shots.

The Avalanche, or in this case Nordiques, did score a quick goal after Valeri Nichushkin’s Robinson goal less than a minute after the Hurricanes’ opening marker. However, the first period was all Hurricanes in terms of goals as they led 4-1 going into the break while the Avalanche outscored them 18-12.

Only one goal was scored in the second period, coming from Parker Kelly for his first of the season. Initially facing a challenge from the Hurricanes for a missed stoppage, it stood as the lead was cut to 4–2. Furthermore, Frederik Andersen played otherworldly to keep the Hurricanes ahead by two goals. Andersen had to do this after seeing sixteen shots in the middle frame. After 40 minutes, the Hurricanes led 4-2 while being defeated by the Avalanche 34-17.

In the third period, former Hurricanes player Martin Necas got the Avalanche back in the period in just under five minutes. Ultimately, the home team tied the game and Nichushkin scored his second of the match on the power play. After a slew of penalties, the match settled into a 4-4 draw, with both teams securing a point.

In overtime, both teams had a power play, but no dice for either side. After 65 minutes the match went into a shootout to see who would secure the second point of the match. Andersen stopped all three of the Avalanche’s attempts. However, Trent Minor could not stop Jarvis’ try in Round 1 and the Hurricanes emerged with the 5-4 victory. After thirteen penalties and eight goals, the instant classic came to an end.

The Hurricanes are 6-1-0 on the season and 4-1-0 on the road trip. As for the Avalanche, they are still undefeated in regulation, but they have lost twice in the shootout this season. They are now 5-0-3 on the season. The Hurricanes’ next game is on Saturday, October 25 against the Dallas Stars. The Avalanche will take on the Boston Bruins on October 25 in Boston.
