Huge ATP CEO gives his verdict on Joao Fonseca

Joao Fonseca is certainly destined to become one of men’s tennis’ biggest draws.

The young Brazilian star has already achieved great results for a player only 19 years old and the general feeling is that his rise is only just beginning. He has won two titles this season, triumphing on the red clay of Buenos Aires and at the Basel ATP 500 in indoor conditions, and he has also put in some truly outstanding performances against opponents far more experienced than him (the most notable example being the stunning victory over Andrey Rublev at the Australian Open earlier this year).

The South American tennis player has also had completely normal declines and has had to endure some criticism, but he has a very solid team around him and continues to work hard to overcome his current weaknesses. Joao can still grow a lot physically and can add further solutions to his game, which is already really complete.

Fonseca has already amazed everyone

Numerous experts and former players are convinced that this man has the potential to become a real threat to Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, who have dominated the men’s tour for two years and have created a gigantic gap with all their rivals.

In a recent interview with ‘WOWOW’, Japanese veteran Kei Nishikori – who got the chance to face Fonseca in this year’s Phoenix Challenger – gave his honest opinion about the Brazilian star: “His ball is fast and heavy. He also has a good angle, so I think he is a player who plays well.”

If he could cut back on his mistakes a little bit, I think he could easily get into the top ten or even top five, and I think he has the personality to reach the top. Fonseca was throwing balls at speeds I’ve never experienced before, so I couldn’t let my guard down during the rallies.

Any ball that was even slightly soft was knocked back, so I was under constant pressure. I think this kind of strength is something that only a young player can have. I am sure Fonseca will improve.”
