The move seems to be a response to South Korea that removes its border speakers earlier this week

Noord -Korea started dismantling some of its border speakers, according to the joint staff chefs of South Korea (JCS). It seems to be a mutual step after Seoul had removed about 20 of his own devices earlier this week.

Pyongyang had installed around 40 speakers to convey a mix of disturbing sounds, from metallic scraping to creepy, ghostly sounds, to the south. These broadcasts had been a continuous irritating for residents in border areas such as Paju, Gimpo and Yeoncheon for almost a year.

North Korea stopped the noise campaign at midnight on 12 June, hours after South Korea stopped its own speaker broadcasts after an order from the newly chosen President Lee Jae-Myung.

Lee, who took office in June after a Snap election, tried years of escalating tension among his predecessor, Yoon Suk Yeol, to reverse. Shortly after his inauguration, Lee suspended the cross-border propaganda campaign of the South, which had spoken K-pop, news and political messages. With social groups, he also insisted that he stops sending anti-North Propaganda Folders and signaled an openness for conversations without conditions.

In 2018, the two Koreas dismantled all speakers under the Panmunjom declaration, but unraveled the agreement. The South had resumed loudspeaker activities in mid-2024 in response to Pyongyang that stood thousands of waste filled with waste across the border as a retribution for South Korean activists who are launching leaflets in the north. The broadcasts, which can travel more than 20 kilometers, were framed by Seoul as a way to deliver “Messages from light and hope” To the people of the North and the Army.

The new South Korean president has promised to end both propaganda broadcasts and the folder campaigns. His predecessor, Yoon, was accused and charged in December for resurrection after briefly imposed “revolt” by pro-pyongyang troops in the opposition.

Seoul and his most important ally, Washington, have been technically at war with Pyongyang since 1953.
