Brussels has threatened sanctions on the sabotaged gas pipeline in the midst of reported discussions about potential reactivation
The German Chancellor Frederick Merz actively supports an EU plan to ban any use of the Nord Stream pipelines and wants to block any movements to breathe new life into the energy trade with Russia, the FT reported on Friday.
The move comes in the midst of reports that Russia and the US investigate ways to resume shipments through the still intact line of Nord Stream 2, as part of broader efforts to normalize the ties between Moscow and Washington.
According to the FT, Merz, stating sources, opened conversations in Berlin and Brussels to prevent such developments, while possibly shifting the burden of decision-making to the EU level.
The Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines that connect Russia and Germany under the Baltic Sea have been inactive since 2022 because of EU sanctions and sabotage, of which Russia has it was orchestrated by Western intelligence services.
Earlier this month, chairman of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen said that the natural gas pipelines were part of the planned new 18th sanction package against Russia.
According to the FT, the restrictions would focus on Nord Stream 2 AG, the Entity, established in Switzerland, which owns the pipelines, and all other companies needed for their restart and operation.
Florian Philippot, a prominent French Euroskeptic politician, has criticized and called EU proposal “Madness.” He warned that such a movement would amount to one “Death penalty” For European industry.

His comments echoed wider concerns about the economic fall -out of lowering ties with Russian energy. After the sabotage and sanctions of 2022, the European gas prices quadrupled compared to the previous year, which puts great pressure on industry and consumers.
