How Tony Romo Keeps Himself ‘Aligned and Healthy’ After Retiring from the NFL – Muscle & Fitness

After dealing with multiple collarbone fractures and two back surgeries that ended his 14-year NFL career, Tony Romo is doing his best to maintain his health.

“It’s different from football,” the CBS football analyst says of his current training regimen as he sits next to his father Ramiro and raising awareness for prostate cancer with Bayer’s Highlight’s Real campaign. “Football is about strength and explosiveness. Now it’s more about being flexible. I tried that then, but it’s more about that now after the back surgery. It’s more about keeping myself aligned and staying in a position to be healthy.”

The four-time Pro Bowl Quarterback’s routine isn’t quite what it was during his playing days, but thanks to his kids, he’s stayed pretty conditioned.

“There are now several gyms,” says Tony. “Not just going to the gym, but going to the gym because my boys love basketball. And then the court, but I’m always doing something and being active. There’s no doubt about that. I think that’s literally part of what I hope to do for the rest of my life because I’ve always enjoyed that.”

The Romo family learned firsthand the importance of health when they least expected it.

In October 2007, after watching his son play against the Chicago Bears, Ramiro was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Together with his siblings, Romo soon took care of his father when he was not on the field.

“I would say it was more the desire to become a caregiver [and] a resource to help dad,” Romo says. “And just be there for him, because your dad is like Superman in some ways, and you don’t think they’ll ever go through something like that. He’s immortal in some ways, and he just became mortal where it’s like, ‘Oh, you could potentially lose your father.’ That was obviously a difficult phase, but my job is to be there for him and help him in any way I can. My sisters, my mother, my extended family, the doctors and the caregivers have just been incredible in this process, and I think that’s one of the biggest things: those people are as important as anything you can say.

The grueling experience was a wake-up call for the ever-active father-son duo, who try their best to be proactive about their overall health.

“I honestly think it’s just like everything we’ve learned all our lives,” Tony says. “My dad is incredibly active at his age and I’m so impressed. No matter what parent you do, sometimes you teach your child. You tell them, you do it over and over again, and other times they learn by osmosis by watching, and so just watching my dad and seeing how active he is and how dedicated he is to exercise, to being in shape, to eating healthy and doing the right things, that’s just one of those things. It’s another learning lesson for all of us, my grandkids and everyone. And I think that too. that’s part of our daily routine. It’s just how we grew up and sometimes it’s just the environment you’re in.

Romo’s father’s cancer journey is behind him, and he is grateful for his good health, including his reduced stress levels now that his son has retired from contact sports and is only seen on the field when he is commentating.

“One hundred percent!” says Ramiro. “I’m not worried about him getting tackled in the back or anything, or him breaking another disc or another one. It’s much better.”

Even though the 2025-2026 NFL season is about to come to a close with this Sunday’s Super Bowl, fans of the Romos can still get their fix by joining them online and coming up with a game plan to stay on top of their own health.

“It’s helped me appreciate the small, meaningful moments I can share with him,” Tony says of the campaign, also commenting alongside his father. “It makes you think about life a little differently, maybe about things you didn’t think about before.”
